The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that a widespread outbreak of monkeypox remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, which the WHO officially declared last July when monkeypox spread beyond its traditional endemic areas in Africa. This is the highest level of alert the global health authority can issue.

Although the monkeypox outbreak has ended in most of the countries where it had spread, it continues to rage in western and central Africa.

As of 2022, the world had recorded 82,000 cases of monkeypox in 110 countries.
