Reporters reported that Mr. Maris Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Ministerial Meetings in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic. The official meeting began today with Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, in his capacity as Chair of ASEAN, presiding over the opening ceremony. Mr. Salemxay Kommasid, in his opening remarks, praised the success of the process of building a friendly ASEAN Community and strengthening external relations through mechanisms with ASEAN at the core, which have contributed to promoting peace, stability and prosperity both inside and outside the region. He stressed that ASEAN's success was achieved through the reso lute efforts in the ASEAN Way, which demonstrates the unity and solidarity of ASEAN amidst its diversity. Mr. Salemxay Kommasid also said that given the complexities and rapid changes in political and economic geography, it is imperative that we further strengthen ASEAN centrality and ASEAN unity to promote ASEAN engagement and resilience with the aim of addressing and managing these emerging challenges, as well as enabling ASEAN to seize future opportunities. The most closely watched issue in today's meeting is the discussion on the situation in Myanmar. On July 24, Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia, as the past, present and future ASEAN Chairs, discussed the five-point consensus of ASEAN leaders on Myanmar, which is expected to be summarized and acknowledged at the informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, where other ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to express their views on the matter extensively. The meeting was also attended by Myanmar Foreign Minister Aung Kyaw Moe, who will be attending meetings with ASEA N foreign ministers as a non-political representative of Myanmar. Aung Kyaw Moe will participate in all meetings taking place during the 57th AMM and other related meetings this week. Source: Thai News Agency
